Try to go local if you can - locals are less likely to have made ruinous amounts of Alt-A loans. I just pulled my money out of Washington Mutual because I expect them to go under. Sympathy.
A bank is a business, a credit union is a group of people working under the leadership of the union itself for safe storage of their money. Ultimately, the difference is size and fuck-you attitude. I'll never go with a bank again.
I'm with TechCu. Been with them for about 8 years now, and I've had nothing but good service. I think to become a member (and I don't know if the requirements have changed), you need to be employed by a member company, live, work or worship in one of the 6 Bay Area counties, or be employed by or reside with a current member. Easy :)
I belong to TechCu as well. Since I can do everything online, I don't really talk to the people there. I did put in for one loan which the kinda screwed up and had troubles fixing.
I do like the fact that I can go to almost any credit union and take money out without a fee. So, even though I'm with a specific CU, I don't feel confined. There is a website of affiliates I can check on the road.
