So! There's been a lot of discussion about art sites and the various problems on several mailing lists I'm on, so I thought I'd bring what I posted there here to get more opinions.

So I want to get folk's opinions. If you could change anything about the various art sites out there, DA, FA, VCL etc, what would you change?

And alternatively, what features of the above sites do you really like and think should remain?

I really like the idea of filters so certain art categories don't pop up, but FA's still don't work properly. I do like the layout of FA though.

Um...that probably wasn't helpful, but I blame it on me just waking up.

Oh boy...

I 'run' YNA. I have a "WTF IS WRONG/RIGHT" art site feature list about a mile wrong. Where did YNA go on the radar? Oh, since we didn't have a "Cub Porn?" controversy, or didn't promote Hooray Porn, nobody knew about us after a while.

FA is basically trying to BE Deviant Art. Look at the feature comparisons.

Watch lists for artists are nice. You can 'subscribe' to an artist's gallery and see when they upload new things. The -biggest- problem with this, is listing who peoples fave's are, and who faved who -publically-

This becomes Popularity Contest -very- fast.

Comments System: Augh. There is -MORE- noise than signal in -ANY- non-moderated comment system. There will -always- be more noise than signal. Hell, look at half of the "DA" drama fests. How many of them would never have happened, had there been no comments-everywhere. Hell, look at "youtube"'s comments. How many of those comments on a "top 100" video are absolutely worthless?

Then again, you let people moderate the comments on their journal, and you only get the comments that -they- want people to see.

Filters:
I want a "Did I put someone in this list? Then I don't want to see anything they upload, at all. Fuck them with a boat." This way I see artists I like, and new artists. But I'm not stuck flipping through page after page after page of "MY EYES! MAKE ME UNSEE THIS!"

Genre Filters;
Like artist filters, but lets me block out any 'genre' I don't want to see. For example, I can browse the "adult" section, without getting "LOL, Soiled Diaper Cub Masturbating With A Monkey Wrench!"

No Statistics On How many uploads, page views, favourites, friends, watches, comments, comments made. That shit is just numerical masturbation. You want to know how many you've made, fine, it can be on your private profile.

Drama On Who Is Allowed In.
Dear $diety... Every time I see a new art community that attempts to put forth a standard of skill-to-get-in, I see almost as much drama spring up, as if the place was invaded by /b/tards... Lets be honest... "Online Furry Community" and "Drama" are synonymous.

Feh, I'm going to end it here before I blow the buffer length.

I wish FA had the ability to control content notifications by type, like only receive journal posts from certain individuals.

I wish all galleries were as elegant as artspots with the searching power of FA.

I /adore/ artspots.

I think the watchlist and favorites is a useful thing. After having the long experience of dealing with filters on VCL, I've found their use to be limited, especially when in an area where so many works are added every day. Filtering out an entire artist's work because they cover an unwelcome topic in some of their creations but not all is unhelpful, and depending on artists themselves to properly label things is a mug's game.

I especially like that viewing adult artwork on FA isn't a matter of simply GOING to the site, as on VCL. I like that they require you to make an account, enter a birthdate (I realize this is easily faked, of course, but it is an extra step), and furthermore, you have to select an option to display mature artwork.

I'm not going to go so far as to hide my identity when uploading adult stuff, but I do prefer to keep it less accessible, especially to say, non-furs.

Also..I noticed AS recently implemented user icons for users on your watchlist to be RIGHT on your main art gallery. I kind of dislike this, as although the networking is great, I prefer when AS was more minimalist and more focused on the art.

Kind of how Yerf was very direct to the point in regards to displaying art.

I think watchlists and favs are awesome, but I guess I'd prefer to see them in their own locations, like under their own tabs, rather than cluttering up the main page.
