I can't say enough good things about the books. Pullman's from the tradition that brought about Tolkien and Lewis, and where Lewis used his children's books to defend Christianity...Pullman's is an assault on the authoritarianism inherent not only in Christian practice, but within its core theology.
On a non-meta level, it's a smart trilogy about a smart, but realistic child in an amazing world (and subsequently worlds) that shows in a drastic level how we can grow apart from our parents, and become free of any authority other than ourselves. The moments of heroism are great, the moments of failure are devastating.
I cannot speak on how well the movies are done (I have high hopes), but the books, I can't say enough.
