I don't see why they feel the need to stay in San Jose at all. FC's been in Santa Clara and San Mateo, so it's not as if there's not a precedent for moving to a different town.
I'd be much more willing to pay more for a split-hotels layout with a shuttle than the hassles of dealing with a full-sized convention center. I've done far too much setup/tear down work, and run into locations where I couldn't even turn our custom-built proprietary router/computer, but had to wait for what amounted to 'the official power-button pusher' to get around to turning our gear on and sit behind us while we configured it, then walk off to the next booth. It was either step him through all the work, or pay him the same amount per hour and just set it up ourselves. Either way, he got payed for the setup and tear down of our gear.
