Okay, definite progress made! After a bit of fighting to get NTFS support working I have access to all my windows drives as well as the house server. Pidgin is compiled and running, and the video settings are locked in, giving me proper resolution (1440x900) on both monitors (soon to go to three.)

I'm now running KDE, which I honestly like better than Gnome. I've gotten that all configured as well. Sound works fantastically, and Linux understands my 5.1 sound setup. Amarok has learned my music collection, and I have hardware graphics support running. Glxgears is giving me 15,700fps.

But the best thing so far is SecondLife. I had to install the ia32 libs to get it to work, since I'm on AMD64, but once those were installed it came up cleanly. There's still a bit of glitching in the audio when playing a stream, but the impressive part is I'm wearing a prim heavy avatar currently. In windows, running the latest NGO HQ drivers, I get 11-15fps when looking at this avatar. In linux, I'm holding at 75fps. So far the client is rock solid.

Honestly? I think I can pull off this switch. Other than a few annoying things, like Hamachi refusing to run (though I'll try it again now that ia32-libs are installed), its working wonderfully. I'm still finding programs I need to install, and I haven't delved into Wine territory yet, or getting Adobe CS3 working. But for now, I'm finding things to be just working.

Desktop Linux is close. Very close.
